Why this indicator matters
The legal retirement age sets the point at which people can stop working with a full pension. Comparing it across countries helps show how working life is organized over a lifetime.
What makes this indicator vary
Ages result from society's choices: life expectancy, the balance of pension funds, and social history. Many laws change in stages, and some schemes still distinguish between women and men.
Reading precautions
This is the legal age, not the actual age at which people retire. Complex rules (long careers, children) are not all taken into account. Decimals represent months, and sources may lag behind reforms.
