Legal monthly minimum wage
What this indicator measures
The minimum wage is the lowest monthly pay an employer is allowed to pay, set by law or by a national agreement. Countries with no national legal minimum wage (some countries where wages are set by sector agreements) are absent. Amounts are gross, for one month of full-time work. Here, the amount is converted into US dollars at the exchange rate of the year.
How to read this?
The amount is the gross legal minimum wage for one month, in US dollars; it does not take into account price differences between countries.

Why this indicator matters
The minimum wage sets the legal floor for pay. Comparing it gives an idea of the gap between minimum pay levels, converted into a single currency to make it easier to read.
What makes this indicator vary
The amount depends on the level of wealth, the cost of living, the dialogue between trade unions, employers and the state, and the rules for raising it. Some countries set the minimum by sector or by region rather than nationally.
Reading precautions
The conversion into dollars does not take local prices into account: the same amount does not buy the same thing everywhere. Exchange rates vary, definitions of gross wage differ, and countries with no national minimum are absent.
