Statutory monthly minimum wage in purchasing power parity
What this indicator measures
The minimum wage is the lowest monthly pay that an employer is allowed to pay, set by law or by a national agreement. Countries without a national statutory minimum wage (some countries where wages are set by sector-level agreements) are absent. Amounts are gross, for one month of full-time work. Here, the amount is adjusted for price differences between countries (purchasing power parity), which makes it easier to compare what can be bought with it.
How to read this?
The amount is the gross statutory minimum wage for one month, expressed in international dollars that buy the same thing in every country.

Why this indicator matters
The minimum wage sets the legal floor for pay. Expressed in purchasing power parity, it makes it possible to compare what this minimum can actually buy from one country to another.
What makes this indicator vary
Its level depends on the standard of living, the cost of living, negotiation between unions, employers and the state, and the share of informal work. It is adjusted according to rules specific to each country.
Reading precautions
Countries without a national statutory minimum wage are absent. Amounts are gross, for full-time work. Purchasing power parity conversions are estimates, and many employees may not be covered in practice.
