Adults with an official ID
What this indicator measures
An official ID (identity card, passport, voter card, etc.) makes it possible to prove who you are in order to vote, open a bank account or access public services. This indicator gives the share of people aged 15 and over who say they have one, according to the Global Findex survey (ID4D programme).
How to read this?
A percentage close to 100 means that almost all adults have an official ID.

Why this indicator matters
Without an ID, it is difficult to vote, open an account, receive aid or access services. This indicator compares the share of adults who can prove their identity.
What makes this indicator vary
Coverage depends on the national identification system, its cost, the distance to offices, birth registration and the documents required. Digital identity programmes are changing the situation.
Reading precautions
The data come from a survey of people who report for themselves whether they hold a document. They check neither its validity nor its type. Survey years differ and some countries are missing.
