Why this indicator matters
This ratio compares the number of young and older people with the number of people of usual working age. It sheds light on the theoretical burden of non-working ages.
What makes this indicator vary
It depends on fertility, life expectancy and migration. A high ratio can come from many children or from many older people.
Reading precautions
It is a purely demographic ratio: it assumes that 15-64 year olds work and others do not, which is far from reality. Values estimated by the UN.
