- Compulsory military serviceIn some countries, the law requires citizens (often men, sometimes women too) to perform military service for a given period, even when the army also recruits volunteers. Elsewhere, the army is made up only of volunteers and professionals. The classification comes from the text of the CIA World Factbook on military service age and obligation; countries where the text does not settle the question are left out.
- Compulsory votingIn a few countries, the law requires registered voters to vote, sometimes under threat of a fine. In most countries, voting is a right but not an obligation. Here, “compulsory” means the law provides for it, even if the penalty is not always enforced.
- Age of entry into primary schoolThis is the official age at which children start primary school, according to each country's regulations (source: UNESCO). In most countries, schooling becomes compulsory at that point.
