Why this indicator matters
This indicator measures the share of inhabitants living on very little money, below an international threshold set by the World Bank. It lets you compare situations of severe hardship and track how effective the fight against poverty is around the world.
What makes this indicator vary
It recedes with economic growth, jobs, access to education, health care and social benefits. It increases with wars, food crises, high inflation or climate disasters. In rich countries, it is close to zero.
Reading precautions
The threshold is the same for everyone, in prices adjusted to compare purchasing power, but household surveys are not carried out every year. Many countries therefore have no recent data. Being just above the threshold does not mean living comfortably.
