How to read this?

Why this indicator matters
The Gini index sums up in a single figure the income gap between a country's inhabitants. It lets you quickly compare whether a society is rather equal or highly unequal, whatever its level of wealth.
What makes this indicator vary
Inequality depends on the labor market, the level of education, taxation and social benefits. Access to healthcare, the concentration of property ownership and gaps between cities and the countryside also play a role.
Reading precautions
The index is calculated from household surveys carried out at different dates depending on the country. It may be based on income or on consumption depending on the case, which makes comparisons more delicate.

Does the Gini index measure poverty?
No. It measures the gap between incomes, not the standard of living. A country can be very equal and still poor, and a rich country can be very unequal.
