Why this indicator matters
The homicide rate is one of the most widely used benchmarks for comparing personal safety. It allows countries to be placed in relation to lethal violence, regardless of their size.
What makes this indicator vary
Levels depend on many elements: conflicts, organized crime, inequality, access to weapons, the effectiveness of the police and justice system, and the economic context. They can vary sharply from one year to the next.
Reading precautions
The figures come from police and criminal justice statistics, whose quality and definitions differ between countries. Unrecorded homicides escape the count. In small countries, a few cases can make the rate vary a lot.

Not entirely. The rate only measures recorded intentional homicides. It does not cover other crimes or unreported homicides, and does not always reflect the sense of safety.
