Why this indicator matters
This indicator measures the money workers who have left for another country send to their families back home. It shows how important the diaspora is to the economy. It helps identify countries where these remittances support household incomes.
What makes this indicator vary
It is stronger in countries with many emigrants, ties to rich economies and lower wages at home. It varies with employment in host countries, sending costs and exchange rates. Economic crises abroad can reduce it.
Reading precautions
It counts only official reported flows: part of the money goes through informal channels and is not measured. Relative to GDP, it looks very high in small economies. It says little about what families do with it.
