Why this indicator matters
This indicator measures the money foreign companies invest in a country in a year: factories, subsidiaries, acquisitions. It lets you compare how attractive countries are to international capital, in absolute terms.
What makes this indicator vary
It rises with political stability, a large market, a skilled workforce, attractive taxation and clear laws. It falls during a crisis, uncertainty or restrictions on investors. A single large acquisition can make a given year swing sharply.
Reading precautions
The figures vary a lot from year to year and can be distorted by financial arrangements routed through low-tax countries. The raw amount favors large countries.
