Linguistic diversity (fractionalization index)
What this indicator measures
Measures the probability that two people randomly drawn in the country do not belong to the same linguistic group. Calculation published by Alesina and coauthors (2003) from sources such as the Encyclopædia Britannica; the groups used are those of these sources and the data date from different periods depending on the country.
How to read this?
Between 0 (a single group) and 1 (very many groups of equal size). The higher the value, the more the population is spread across many groups speaking different languages.
Ranking : ranked from highest to lowest
In brief
Linguistic diversity (fractionalization index): across 203 countries and territories, values range from 0 (San Marino) to 0.92 (Uganda), with a world median of 0.34. Data: 2003. The top 10% of countries exceed 0.79, while the bottom 10% stay below 0.02. By continent, the median is highest in Africa (0.71) and lowest in North America (0.1).
Median by continent
- Africa 0.71 (51)
- Asia 0.4 (49)
- Oceania 0.38 (19)
- Europe 0.19 (44)
- South America 0.11 (12)
- North America 0.1 (26)
Why this indicator matters
This index indicates whether a country's inhabitants mostly speak the same language or several different languages. It helps compare linguistic diversity between countries.
What makes this indicator vary
It depends on history, borders, official and local languages, and how sources distinguish a language from a dialect.
Reading precautions
The groups counted depend on the starting sources and the definitions chosen. The data date from different periods and do not track recent changes. The index says nothing about how the groups live together.
