Majority religion
What this indicator measures
Indicator calculated from Pew Research Center population shares (2020). A religion is shown when more than 50% of inhabitants identify with it; otherwise the country is classified as "No absolute majority". People with no religious affiliation are counted as a separate group.
How to read this?
The group shown accounts for more than half of the population; "No absolute majority" means no group exceeds 50%.
In brief
Majority religion: 192 countries and territories covered. Breakdown: Christians (over 50%) : 114 ; Muslims (over 50%) : 50 ; Hindus (over 50%) : 2 ; Buddhists (over 50%) : 7 ; Jews (over 50%) : 1 ; No religious affiliation (over 50%) : 10 ; Other religions (over 50%) : 1 ; No absolute majority : 7.
Why this indicator matters
This indicator says which religious group accounts for more than half of a country's population, if there is one. It gives an overview of the world's religious map.
What makes this indicator vary
It depends on the shares of each religion, and therefore on history, migration and birth rates. It is calculated from Pew Research Center estimates, with a 50% threshold.
Reading precautions
The classification is derived by this site: a country at 49% and another at 30% are both "without an absolute majority". It says nothing about practice or the role of religion in law.
