Why this indicator matters
This indicator shows how important sales abroad are in a country's economy. It helps identify economies open to world trade and those living mainly off their domestic market. It helps in understanding dependence on foreign customers.
What makes this indicator vary
It is high for small countries, trading hubs and those that sell a lot of raw materials or industrial products. It is lower in large countries with a vast domestic market. Commodity prices, tourism and trade agreements make it vary.
Reading precautions
Exports include goods and services, such as tourism or transport. For some highly connected countries, they include products that were imported and then re-exported, which inflates the share. The value is relative to GDP, so it can exceed a large share of it.
