Why this indicator matters
This indicator measures what a country sells abroad without producing a physical object: travel, transport, banking, insurance, IT. It lets you compare countries that live off tourism or digital services with those that mainly export goods.
What makes this indicator vary
It rises with tourism, ports and airports, financial centers, command of English and digital talent. It falls during a health crisis, political tensions or high transport costs. A large country naturally exports more in value.
Reading precautions
The value is in current dollars, so it is sensitive to exchange-rate and price changes. It does not take the size of the country into account: to compare the effort, also look at the share of GDP.
