Why this indicator matters
This indicator sums up all of a country's money exchanges with the rest of the world: trade, income and transfers. Relative to national wealth, it shows whether the country is living above or below its means with respect to the rest of the world. It helps identify lender and borrower countries.
What makes this indicator vary
It improves when exports exceed imports, when expatriate workers send money home or when investments abroad pay off. It deteriorates when the country imports a lot, for example energy or capital goods. Domestic saving and consumption also play a role.
Reading precautions
A negative balance is not always a problem: it can fund useful investments. A positive balance is not always a sign of good health. Figures are revised regularly and depend on the quality of each country's statistics.
