Why this indicator matters
This indicator totals everything a country sells abroad in the form of goods: machinery, oil, clothing, farm products. It helps measure a country's weight in world trade. It also shows how much its economy lives off external markets.
What makes this indicator vary
Exports depend on the size of industry, available resources and price competitiveness. Trade agreements, tariffs and demand from foreign customers play a role. The price of raw materials can push them up or down even with no change in production.
Reading precautions
The amount is in current dollars, so it varies with prices and the exchange rate. It does not include services (tourism, IT) and does not account for the size of the country: a large country naturally exports more than a small one.
