Why this indicator matters
This indicator shows the place health takes in a country's economy, public and private care combined.
What makes this indicator vary
It depends on wealth, aging, the price of care, the financing system, common diseases and the role left to private insurance.
Reading precautions
Spending more does not mean treating better. A low or sharply fluctuating GDP can move the ratio. It counts current expenditure, not investment.
