What this indicator measures
The share of the territory where crops can be grown (grains, vegetables and so on), not counting pastures and orchards.
How to read this?
The higher it is, the more good farmland the country has.
Ranking : ranked from highest to lowest

The top 10% of countries exceed 34.4 %, while the bottom 10% stay below 0.8 %. By continent, the median is highest in Europe (22 %) and lowest in Oceania (2 %).
Median by continent
- Europe 22 % (44)
- Africa 11.2 % (51)
- Asia 10.4 % (47)
- North America 8.9 % (30)
- South America 3.4 % (12)
- Oceania 2 % (17)
Why this indicator matters
Arable land shows the share of the territory that can really be cultivated for cereals or vegetables. It helps compare countries' agricultural potential and their ability to produce enough to feed their population.
What makes this indicator vary
This share depends on terrain, climate, soil quality and access to water. Urbanization, desertification, irrigation and farming choices can also change it.
Reading precautions
Meadows, orchards and forests are not counted, so a livestock-farming country can show a low share. The amount of land says nothing about its yield or how it is farmed.
