Why this indicator matters
Forest cover shows what share of a territory is occupied by forests. It is used to compare countries on the place of nature, carbon storage and biodiversity. It is a key reference when talking about climate and the environment.
What makes this indicator vary
It depends first on climate: humid regions become wooded easily, arid areas much less so. Agriculture, urbanization, logging and fires reduce forests. Conversely, reforestation and the protection of natural areas make them grow.
Reading precautions
The indicator is expressed as a share of land area, and says nothing about the quality of the forest. An ancient natural forest and a tree plantation count the same way. Definitions of "forest" vary slightly from one country to another.
