Why this indicator matters
Giving birth with trained personnel lowers the risks for the mother and the baby. Comparing this shows real access to care around childbirth, a key element of reproductive health.
What makes this indicator vary
Access depends on the number of trained health workers, the distance to health centres, roads, the cost of care and local customs. Public health policies and the funding of the health system also play a role.
Reading precautions
The figures come from surveys or registers, sometimes old or estimated. “Skilled” may be defined slightly differently from one country to another. The value does not measure the quality of the care received.
