Why this indicator matters
The number of deaths linked to pregnancy and childbirth reflects access to care, information and reproductive rights. Comparing it makes it possible to measure how safe motherhood is from one country to another.
What makes this indicator vary
Differences stem from access to prenatal care and assisted delivery, contraception, mothers' health, poverty, distances and the resources of the health system.
Reading precautions
The values are modeled estimates, because many deaths are not recorded. They carry a margin of uncertainty, especially when numbers are small. Small changes from one year to the next are not significant.
