Why this indicator matters
Gross capital formation measures a country's effort to build what it needs to produce tomorrow: factories, roads, housing, machinery. It lets you compare economies that are preparing their growth with those that devote their resources mainly to consumption.
What makes this indicator vary
It rises during phases of strong growth, reconstruction or major infrastructure projects, and when companies are confident about the future. It falls during crises, political instability or financing difficulties. Changes in inventories can also move it.
Reading precautions
It adds up all investment, useful or not, without saying whether it is well chosen. A high rate does not guarantee lasting growth. The indicator is expressed as a share of GDP, based on the World Bank's national accounts.
