Why this indicator matters
This indicator shows the weight of factories in a country's wealth: making cars, clothing, machinery, processed food. It lets you compare economies focused on producing goods with those that rely more on services or resources.
What makes this indicator vary
It rises when a country attracts factories, has an abundant or skilled workforce, and exports manufactured products. It falls when the economy turns toward services or when production is offshored. Energy prices and trade agreements also matter.
Reading precautions
Value added is the wealth created by the factory after deducting what it buys in order to make its products. It differs from turnover. A highly industrial country can have a low share if its services or raw materials weigh even more.
