Why this indicator matters
This indicator shows the weight of services in a country's wealth: trade, health, education, banking, tourism. It lets you see whether an economy rests mainly on agriculture and industry or on service activities.
What makes this indicator vary
The share of services increases with development: the richer a country gets, the more its inhabitants consume services. Tourism, finance and digital activity strengthen it, while heavily industrial or commodity-rich countries have a lower share.
Reading precautions
This indicator is calculated as a share of GDP, so it compares economic structures and not levels of wealth. A high share is not always a sign of success: some services have low productivity.
