Why this indicator matters
This indicator shows what share of national wealth comes from industry, mining, energy and construction. It lets you compare industrial economies with those oriented toward services or agriculture.
What makes this indicator vary
It rises with the setting up of factories, the extraction of oil or minerals and major building projects. It falls when services develop, when factories relocate or when commodity prices collapse.
Reading precautions
Construction and extractive industries are counted with industry, which mixes very different activities. It measures the wealth created, not the number of jobs: the two can move differently.
