Why this indicator matters
This indicator shows what share of the wealth produced is used to buy goods and services for daily life: food, housing, transport, leisure. It shows whether the economy relies mainly on residents' consumption or on other drivers, such as investment or exports.
What makes this indicator vary
It rises when households spend a large share of their income, often because they cannot save or because public and private investment is low. It falls when savings, exports or government spending weigh more in the economy. Money sent from abroad can also inflate it.
Reading precautions
It is expressed as a share of GDP, so it says nothing about the real standard of living. A high share can reflect well-off households as well as households spending almost everything on essentials.
