Why this indicator matters
This indicator shows what share of national wealth comes from agriculture, livestock, fishing and forestry. It lets you compare the weight of the farm sector in each country's economy. It is a simple reference for telling rural economies apart from those geared toward industry and services.
What makes this indicator vary
The share falls when industry and services grow faster than agriculture. It also depends on climate, arable land, mechanization and farm product prices. A poor harvest or a drought can reduce it from one year to the next.
Reading precautions
Value added is the wealth created by the sector, once the purchases needed for production are subtracted. A low share does not mean the country produces little: it may simply reflect an otherwise highly developed economy.
