Why this indicator matters
The GDP deflator tracks the change in prices of everything a country produces, not just household purchases. Economists use it to separate real growth from a simple rise in prices. It complements classic inflation for comparing countries.
What makes this indicator vary
It rises when the prices of goods produced in the country go up: wages, energy, raw materials, strong demand, money creation. It can also follow the prices of exported products, such as oil. It falls or turns negative when production prices decline.
Reading precautions
It covers domestic output and not the imported products that households buy. It can therefore differ from everyday inflation. It is calculated by statisticians from national accounts, with occasional revisions.
