Official exchange rate
What this indicator measures
How many units of the country's currency it takes to buy 1 US dollar.
How to read this?
The bigger the number, the less the local currency is worth against the dollar. Amounts are in local currency and are not converted.

Why this indicator matters
The exchange rate shows how many units of local currency it takes to get one US dollar. It matters to travelers, businesses and investors. It helps show where a currency stands against the reference currency of world trade.
What makes this indicator vary
It moves with inflation, interest rates, confidence in the economy, the trade balance and central bank decisions. Some countries peg their currency to the dollar, others let it float. A crisis or strong inflation often pushes up the number of units needed.
Reading precautions
Amounts are in local currency and are not converted. A high number does not mean the country is poor or that prices are low: it mostly depends on how the currency was divided up. It is the change over time that is compared, not the level.
