Why this indicator matters
Private-life freedoms affect everyday life: moving around, owning property, believing freely and not being forced to work. This index allows these protections to be compared.
What makes this indicator vary
They depend on legal tradition, the strength of the courts, the place of religion in the state and the political regime. Reforms and crises can strengthen or reduce them.
Reading precautions
The index from the V-Dem project combines expert assessments, with a margin of uncertainty. It ranges from 0 to 1 and measures respect for these freedoms in practice as well as in law. It does not cover freedom of expression or the right to vote.
