Why this indicator matters
Corruption diverts public resources and weakens trust in institutions. This indicator makes it possible to compare how experts and surveys perceive the control of this phenomenon.
What makes this indicator vary
The perception of corruption depends on the strength of institutions, the independence of the judiciary, public transparency, press freedom and political history. It changes slowly.
Reading precautions
This is a perception, not a direct measure of actual corruption. It is an estimate with a margin of error: small gaps between two countries are not significant. The underlying data come from surveys and experts.
