Corruption Perceptions Index
What this indicator measures
This Transparency International index scores perceived corruption in the public sector from 0 (very corrupt) to 100 (very clean): bribes, embezzlement, favoritism. It is calculated from several surveys of experts and business leaders, not from cases tried in court.
How to read this?
The closer the score is to 100, the less public-sector corruption is perceived; the closer it is to 0, the more it is.

Why this indicator matters
Public-sector corruption weighs on trust in the state, on the economy and on equality before the law. This index offers a common, if imperfect, benchmark for comparing countries.
What makes this indicator vary
Perceived corruption depends on the transparency of institutions, the independence of the justice system, press freedom, oversight of public spending and the effective enforcement of rules.
Reading precautions
The index measures a perception, based on surveys of experts and business leaders, not proven facts. It only covers the public sector. It may change with the sources used and their timing.
