Why this indicator matters
Net national income per capita shows the wealth actually available per person, once the wear and tear of capital is deducted. It offers a more cautious view of the standard of living than gross income, useful for comparing very different economies.
What makes this indicator vary
It rises with productivity, investment and income coming from abroad. It falls when capital wears out quickly, for example in highly industrialized economies or when equipment ages without being replaced.
Reading precautions
The value is expressed in current dollars, so the exchange rate influences the comparison and does not reflect local prices. It is a per-person average: it says nothing about how income is shared among people.
