GDP per capita
What this indicator measures
The wealth produced in one year, divided by the number of inhabitants. It is a simple way to compare average living standards.
How to read this?
The higher it is, the more wealth the country produces per person. Careful: it is an average, and it hides inequality.

Why this indicator matters
GDP per capita is the most widely used indicator for comparing countries' average standard of living. It answers the question of how much wealth is produced per person. It helps place a country on the income scale.
What makes this indicator vary
It rises with productivity, education, investment, innovation and well-managed natural resources. It falls in the event of war, crisis or fast population growth. The exchange rate against the dollar also plays a part.
Reading precautions
It is an average: it says nothing about inequality or what a household actually receives. Expressed in current dollars, it does not account for price differences between countries, nor for well-being, health or the environment.
