Why this indicator matters
This indicator estimates the wealth produced per person while taking local living costs into account. It lets you compare real purchasing power between countries, which GDP per capita converted at the exchange rate does not.
What makes this indicator vary
It grows with productivity, education levels, investment and access to energy and technology. It also depends on local prices: where life is cheaper, the same sum buys more. Natural resources and political stability matter too.
Reading precautions
It is an average: it says nothing about how income is distributed among residents. Purchasing power parity relies on an estimated price basket, so it is approximate. Amounts are expressed in international dollars, a unit of comparison and not a real currency.
