Why this indicator matters
Gross national income per capita gives an idea of residents' average income, including what they earn abroad. The World Bank uses it to classify countries as low, middle or high income. It lets you compare average living standards between countries.
What makes this indicator vary
It rises with productivity, industrialization, education, investment and income from abroad. It falls with crises, rapid population growth or currency depreciation. Commodity prices also weigh on exporting countries.
Reading precautions
It is an average: it hides the gaps between rich and poor. The Atlas method smooths exchange-rate variations, but it does not account for local prices. The same amount therefore does not buy the same things everywhere.
