GDP, purchasing power parity
What this indicator measures
The size of the economy, calculated with prices "evened out" between countries so that the same shopping basket is worth the same everywhere.
How to read this?
Lets you compare what economies really produce, without being skewed by price differences.

Median by continent
- South America $463.8B (12)
- Europe $372B (43)

Why this indicator matters
GDP at purchasing power parity measures the size of an economy while taking local prices into account. It lets you compare what countries really produce, without the exchange rate distorting the picture.
What makes this indicator vary
It increases with the labor force, investment, productivity and access to resources. Large, populous countries weigh heavily, while price differences between countries can noticeably change the gap with standard GDP.
Reading precautions
The "equalized" prices are estimated from international surveys, which leaves some margin of uncertainty. This total says nothing about individual living standards: for that, it must be divided by the number of inhabitants.

It is a method that corrects for price differences between countries. It calculates how much the same basket of goods and services costs everywhere, so that economies can be compared on an equivalent basis.
Why does GDP at PPP differ from standard GDP?
Standard GDP converts everything into dollars at the exchange rate. GDP at PPP takes into account that the same purchase costs less in some countries, which changes the comparison.
