Road traffic deaths
What this indicator measures
Estimated number of people killed in road accidents in a year, per 100,000 inhabitants. The figures are WHO estimates, not only deaths recorded by the police.
How to read this?
A value of 10 means 10 road deaths per 100,000 inhabitants over the year.
Ranking : ranked from lowest to highest
In brief
Road traffic deaths: across 188 countries and territories, values range from 0 per 100,000 (San Marino) to 64.6 per 100,000 (Dominican Republic), with a world median of 14.9 per 100,000. Data: 2013–2019. The top 10% of countries exceed 31 per 100,000, while the bottom 10% stay below 4 per 100,000. By continent, the median is highest in Africa (28.2 per 100,000) and lowest in Europe (5.6 per 100,000).
Median by continent
- Africa 28.2 per 100,000 (51)
- South America 15.7 per 100,000 (12)
- Asia 15.4 per 100,000 (46)
- North America 13.4 per 100,000 (22)
- Oceania 11.1 per 100,000 (12)
- Europe 5.6 per 100,000 (42)
Why this indicator matters
Road accidents are a major cause of death, especially among young people. Comparing this rate shows the effect of roads, vehicles, laws and emergency services.
What makes this indicator vary
It depends on road condition, speed, use of seat belts and helmets, drink-driving, vehicle quality, traffic and the speed of emergency response.
Reading precautions
These are WHO estimates, more reliable than police figures alone. The years are not the same for all countries, and the rate is relative to population, not to distance traveled.

Frequently asked questions
Which country has the highest value for "Road traffic deaths"?
The highest value is in Dominican Republic, at 64.6 per 100,000 (2019).
Which country has the lowest value for "Road traffic deaths"?
The lowest value is in San Marino, at 0 per 100,000 (2016).
What is the world median value of "Road traffic deaths"?
The world median is 14.9 per 100,000, calculated across 188 countries: half of the countries are above it, the other half below.
What is the value of "Road traffic deaths" for France?
France scores 5.1 per 100,000 (2019), ranking 27 out of 188 countries (ranked from lowest to highest).
Where does the "Road traffic deaths" data come from?
It comes from Banque mondiale (WDI), d'après OMS – Global Health Observatory. Site last updated: November 8, 2026. Each country is shown with the year of its most recent value.
Why use WHO estimates?
Because definitions of a road death differ between countries and many accidents are poorly recorded. The WHO harmonizes these figures.
Does the rate take traffic into account?
No, it is relative to population. A country with few cars can have a high rate if its roads are dangerous.

Indicators in the same category : Births, deaths and life expectancy
- Birth rateNumber of live births in a year, per 1,000 inhabitants. It depends both on the number of children per woman and on the share of women of childbearing age.
- Death rateNumber of deaths in a year, per 1,000 inhabitants. This "crude" rate depends heavily on the age of the population: a very old country can have a high rate despite good care.
- Life expectancy at birthNumber of years a newborn would live on average if the risks of death at each age stayed those observed in the year in question. Both sexes are counted together.
- Female life expectancy at birthNumber of years a girl born this year would live on average if the risks of death at each age stayed those observed in the year in question.
- Male life expectancy at birthNumber of years a boy born this year would live on average if the risks of death at each age stayed those observed in the year in question.
- Healthy life expectancyNumber of years a newborn could expect to live in good health, that is, not counting years lived with a significant illness or disability. Both sexes are counted together (WHO estimate).
- Children per womanAverage number of children a woman would have over her lifetime if, at each age, she had the fertility observed that year (total fertility rate). About 2.1 keeps the population stable without migration.
- Population growthAnnual change in the total population, as a percentage. It combines births, deaths and migration. A negative value means the population is shrinking.
- Infant mortalityNumber of children who die before their first birthday, per 1,000 live births (estimate from the UN Inter-agency Group).
- Under-5 mortalityProbability of dying before the age of 5, expressed per 1,000 live births (estimate from the UN Inter-agency Group).
- Suicide rateNumber of suicide deaths in a year, per 100,000 inhabitants, age-adjusted to allow comparison between countries (WHO estimate). Both sexes are counted together.
- Female suicide rateNumber of suicide deaths among women in a year, per 100,000 women, age-adjusted to allow comparison between countries (WHO estimate).
- Male suicide rateNumber of suicide deaths among men in a year, per 100,000 men, age-adjusted to allow comparison between countries (WHO estimate).
