Why this indicator matters

The presence of women in parliament shows the extent to which they take part in writing laws and in public decisions. It is a simple benchmark for comparing political representation between countries.

What makes this indicator vary

The share of women elected depends on the electoral system, the existence of quotas or parity rules, parties' practices in choosing candidates and changing attitudes toward political life.

Reading precautions

Only the lower or single chamber is counted, not the senate. The value changes after each election and as seats are replaced. A strong presence says nothing about real decision-making power.
